Battalion Wars 2

I wrote a review of this a long time ago that got deleted; so here's a very brief summary.

Overall: BETTER than bw 1. therefore deserving of an 8 (4/5) at least. In my opinion a high 8, so we'll round it up to 4.5/5. (i'm feeling an 8.7)

Graphics: The cutscenes are very nice, the gameplay is above average, especially considering the wii's limitations. 4/5.

Gameplay: Fun. That's all that matters right? If you liked the first battalion wars, you'll love this one. I found the missions less annoying and the controls somewhat easier, there was much less insubordination among my troops. 4.5/5

Controls: better than bw1. still some annoying little things, like the way it's difficult to set up two independent squads to carry out your objective and command them effectively and simultaneously, and my men refuse to capture the stupid hq's; it might be some issue with the online and my connection but the enemy troops are like zombies with huge magnets attaching them to the base, i kill them, they're flat on the ground, and they fly back and keep raising their flag, and my own troops won't take it back down. these are the only real problems however; it's really nice to have a "defend" command and the option to have your troops wait upon finishing an objective. Wii remote makes aiming much easier and controls more comfortable overall. 4/5.

Music: Nicely done, does a good job of conveying the mood, many catchy tunes. 4.5/5.

Presentation: Nicely done, somewhat less childish, the first one bugged me because they treated war like a playground game. The troops still look silly but the cutscenes and overall storyline are somewhat more serious, follow the previous game up nicely, and are gripping enough to make you want to keep playing. The comic-book style effect has been much more successfully pulled off. The music fits, the game starts and ends with a bang, and only Admiral A-Quira's voice hurts the package =p. (Brigadier Betty has been re-cast as MUCH less annoying.) 4.5/5

Replay value: The extra features are meh, but enough to get many perfectionists to strive for an S rank on every mission, the missions are plentiful, and online play makes the game last as long as you and enough other people want it to. 5/5.

Story: As mentioned in presentation, keeps the game going and keeps the player interested enough, a more serious attitude and the scenes before and after each chapter are a nice touch. 4.5/5.

Bottom line: A solid game, the only real-time strategy game for the wii that I know of, and considering its release before most of the big-name winter titles, an excellent job by once unknown developer Kuju. If you're looking for a new game at least consider this before buying the latest mega-hyped sequel.
