Ronin's Magical Starsign review! (with pictures!)

Hey there readers! Welcome to my review of Magical Starsign. Surprisingly, alot of people haven't heard about this game. I bought it at walmart for $20, and wasn't expecting much, but I was very surprised. Well, lets get into it then.

RPG

Story:

Ok, so first I think I will start with the story. You start off on the planet of Kovomaka, and you are a student at Will o wisp academy, a magic school. You are taught by a woman name Madeleine, one of the many great wizards. In the beginning, she is sent to a planet on a mission to defeat another wizard, and tells you that you need to train just in case anything happens to her. She leaves, and three months later she has still not returned. Naturally, these young wizards worry, and begin plotting to save their teacher. Now I know it isn't the strongest story ever, but it works.

Gameplay:

The gameplay in this game is what makes it shine. First off, in this game, the stylus controls EVERYTHING! From walking, to battling, to changing armor, it is all done with the little stylus we have all come to love. Let me start off with interaction. To walk, you point on the screen which direction you want to go, and bam, there your character goes. To talk to someone, merely point to them and they will talk. Now, to check status, armor, items, etc, you just click on an icon that looks like a backpack. It is really simple, and has almost no learning curve at all. Now for the fun part, battling. Once you enter a battle, a bunch of options will appear. You can attack, guard, use a spell, use an item, all the stuff you would expect from an RPG. There are a few things though, that make this game different. First off, each of your characters controls a different kind of magic, ranging from fire to water to earth. In this game, each element has a planet, and based on where it is in the space chart, your character can receive power ups for their magic powers. You don't really know when this is going to happen, but it can be good and bad, because your enemies can receive power ups as well. Now, onto the second part that sets this game apart. When you cast a spell, a circle will appear around your character, and as this circle closes in around your character, you tap you stylus on the screen. If your timing was correct, your spell will be more powerful. This also works when you are physically attacking, or when on defense. If you physically attack, tapping the screen at the right time will boost your power. And tapping it while on defense will lessen the damage taken. It may not sound like much, but it can be very fun, and very challenging. The characters in this game are silly, funny, and overall amusing. This isn't your usual gloom and doom RPG's that are out today. You start out with only two characters, but you eventually will gain more, adding more elements to your team. Gameplay in my opinion is fun, challenging, and entertaining. They did a really good job pulling this off.

This is one of the six characters you will eventually add to your team.

Graphics:

The graphics in this game are very nice. The sprite work is amazing, as shown in the picture below. The bosses look very nice, as do the environments. The only thing I have problems with in this game(and most RPG's actually) is that all the NPCs in a town look alike. You can't tell them apart. It just gets annoying, not everyone is supposed to look the same. The attacks in this game are pretty nice looking too. Some of them make you feel like you can feel the speed in the attack, very nice. Every once in awhile in the game, it plays a nice little 3-d cut scene. They look nice, and I wasn't expecting them the first time I saw them. Overall, graphics are nice.

Sound:

Another kind of gripe. Now, the sound is good, when it comes the the music on the planets. Very creative, and nice to listen to. The annoying music comes when you are in a battle. The battle theme is boring, annoying, and you have to listen to it over and over and over again. Not much else here. Good, but annoying at times.

Overall:

This is a nice little RPG for a handheld, in my opinion it is better than FF3. The sprite work is amazing, the story is lacking but it still works, and the sound is pretty good(most of the time). I would highly recommend any RPG fan to pick this game up, especially since it is a great game and has a great price of $20 or lower. Again, great job Brownie brown!

Story: 3/5
Graphics: 5/5
Sound: 3/5
overall: 4/5

Another well-made review. I'm a little ashamed to say that I still haven't played this game yet (since I love my DS), but I'm going to eventually rent it when I get the chance.
